DNR helps in promoting energy-efficient historic homes

The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources’ Energy Office has teamed up with the Preservation Resource Center (PRC) in sponsoring workshops to promote energy-efficient products and materials as well as hands-on training in the proper insulation techniques in the rebuilding of historic homes in the New Orleans area.

Faulkner, will kick off a series of seminars throughout the Gulf Coast region to promote energy efficiency in post-hurricane rebuilding efforts Thursday, December 15, 2005. The “Rebuilding and Restoring Homes for the Gulf Coast Region” seminar will bring together building industry professionals, including architects, general contractors, residential inspectors, realtors, home builders and owners on the campus of Louisiana State University Agricultural Center.

The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Technology Assessment Division has been awarded a $100,000 grant by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to incorporate energy-efficient and sustainable design practices into Louisiana’s rebuilding efforts. National experts with many years of experience will be available to share building design concepts at scheduled forums to be held in the hurricane affected regions of the state.

This season's hurricanes could further diminish the land along Louisiana's coast that serves as a natural protection for both human and wildlife inhabitants, and also for pipelines that deliver 25 percent of the oil and gas that powers the United States. This coastal area, the seventh largest delta in the world, is already disappearing at the equivalent rate of a football field every 30 minutes, and when a hurricane or tropical storm strikes the coast, the land loss accelerates, putting people, the fragile ecosystem and the nation's energy supply at greater risk.

Energy officials host Clean Cities conference in Baton Rouge

The Clean Cities Statewide Conference met in late January in Baton Rouge to discuss the use of alternative-fuels for public transportation vehicles in the state.
